The Agentic AI Governance Playbook

Most credit unions and community banks are already running AI agents. Fewer than one in eight have a governance program to match. This playbook gives boards and executive teams the framework, the policy templates, and the 180-day rollout plan to close that gap – before the examiner does.

The Agentic AI Governance Playbook — cover

Most credit unions and community banks are already running AI agents. Fewer than one in eight have governance to match. Agentic AI doesn’t just produce outputs – it takes actions. It waives fees, arranges payments, routes members, and drafts responses at scale, after hours, without a supervisor in the loop. That is a different class of exposure, and it requires a different class of governance.

This playbook gives boards and executives the vocabulary, the framework, and the ready-to-adopt templates to govern agentic AI before it governs itself.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Who is this playbook written for?

CEOs, CFOs, COOs, Chief Risk Officers, Chief Compliance Officers, General Counsel, and board members. No technical background required. Read it cover-to-cover on a weekend, or use it as a reference during a 90-day policy sprint.

We don't think we have agentic AI yet. Is this still relevant?

Almost certainly yes. Your core provider has likely enabled ML-driven fraud scoring. Your contact center platform may have added call summarization. “We don’t have AI” almost always means “we don’t have an inventory of our AI.” The playbook starts there.

Does our AI vendor handle regulatory compliance - or do we?

You do. Every regulator – NCUA, FDIC, OCC, CFPB – has been explicit that outsourcing an activity does not outsource the accountability. The playbook includes a 62-question vendor due-diligence questionnaire designed to surface exactly where your vendor’s responsibility ends and yours begins.

What's the minimum viable governance program for a credit union our size?

Six things: an approved AI Governance Policy, a named AI Committee, a living inventory with risk tiers, a vendor questionnaire applied to every AI vendor, a monthly dashboard and quarterly board report, and an incident procedure you’ve tested once. If you have those six, you’re ahead of most peers.

What ready-to-use templates are included?

Four: a full AI Governance Policy, a 62-question AI Vendor Risk Questionnaire, a risk-tiered Use-Case Inventory, and Board Committee Charter Language for Risk, Audit, and Technology committees. Your general counsel will still want a read – but the heavy lifting is done.
